Mayan Fashion

Mayan are Native Americans that originate from Mexico and Central America. Fashion in the mayan culture was very different from what western cultures called modest as they reveal a lot of body. Men would not wear anything to cover up their chest and would wear a cloth that is wrapped around the waist and passed through the legs. Women would wear a skirt and a sleeveless poncho tied together in a knot or with a belt. Headwear and footwear were also very important for them. They wore sandals on their feet with nothing important about them but when you see their headwear you are impressed. Men would wear turban like headdress with feathers, gems and jewellery on it. Women would either wear a turban or tie up their hair in an extravagant way. The mayans also had to figure out a type of material that would work well for their region. After research experts realised that mayans most likely used bark cloth, hemp fiber and cotton to make their clothing. These were often dyed in plant or animal based dyes to bring more life to their clothing. All these materials were easily accessible to the mayan byways of  agriculture and hunting which is something the mayans excelled at. Mayans are known for many things but people don’t think about their fashion so hopefully this text makes it out and people spread the word about what makes mayan fashion unique.
